Manage Devices in the Management Console


Before you can manage Alexa devices and smart devices, you must first associate them with rooms. After you set up your Alexa devices, you can use the Alexa Smart Properties management console to associate them with rooms. You can also discover smart devices and add them to rooms.

Manage devices

After you associate a device with a room, setup mode is disabled. When the device isn't associated with a room, setup mode is enabled.

View Alexa device information

  1. Open the Alexa Smart Properties management console and navigate to the Echo Devices page for your property.
  2. The console displays a list of your account's registered Alexa devices, with the following information:
    • Name – The name of the Alexa device, if the device has a name.
    • Room – The room name, if you've associated the Alexa device with a room.
    • Model – The model of the device.
    • Device Serial Number – The serial number of the Alexa device.
    • MAC Address – The media access control (MAC) address used to identify a device on a wireless network.
    • Connection Status – The availability status of the Alexa device.
      • Online – The device is connected to the network.
      • Offline – The device isn't connected to the network. For example, the device is unplugged, or the network isn't available.
      • Unavailable – The device has been offline for more than 30 days, or there is no device state reported. This status typically indicates an unplugged device.
    • Software Version – The last software update applied to the device. Latest software version numbers can be found on the Amazon Help & Customer Service portal.
  3. To see a list of Alexa devices registered to your account that are available to associate with a room, choose Associate Devices.

Assign an Alexa device to a room

At this time, you can associate an endpoint with one room. Apply settings to a device only after you assign the device to a room.

  1. Open the Alexa Smart Properties management console and navigate to the Echo Devices page for your property.
  2. Choose the Associate Devices button or click Actions > Associate Devices.
  3. From the Echo Devices list, choose the devices to assign and then click Next.
  4. For each device, click in the New Room column and select the room.
  5. Click Next, review the list of changes, and then click Submit.
  6. Use the status bar at top of the page to track the progress of the operation.

Assign multiple Alexa devices to rooms using a CSV file

This feature is available in the US and CA versions of the console.

You can associate up to 1000 devices at one time by importing from a CSV file. Create a file with the header Room ID,DSN, followed by a list of room IDs mapped to device serial numbers (DSN). You can download a CSV file template to use as a starting point.

The following example shows a CSV file with two devices.

  1. Open the Alexa Smart Properties management console and navigate to your Properties page.
  2. In the list of properties, choose the property.
  3. Navigate to the Echo Devices page for the property.
  4. Click Actions > Associate Devices with CSV.
  5. To download a CSV file formatted for importing, click CSV Template, then add your list of room IDs and device serial numbers (DSN) to the downloaded file.
  6. Click Choose File and select the file to import. The console validates the import file and displays any errors.
  7. Click Associate to associate the devices to the rooms.

Export unit IDs to a CSV file

  1. Open the Alexa Smart Properties management console and navigate to your Properties page.
  2. In the list of properties, choose the property.
  3. Navigate to the Rooms page.
  4. Select the rooms to export. Use the Select All button to select them all.
  5. Click Actions > Export Selected. This action downloads a CSV file with the following fields:
    • Property ID
    • Room ID
    • Room Name
    • Number of Echo Devices
    • Last Applied Template
    • Template Applied Time

Export device serial numbers (DSN) for unassociated devices

  1. Open the Alexa Smart Properties management console and navigate to your Properties page.
  2. In the list of properties, choose the property.
  3. Navigate to the Echo Devices page for the property.
  4. Click Associate Devices to display the list of unassociated devices.
  5. Select the devices to export. Use the Select All button to select them all.
  6. Click Export Selected. This action downloads a CSV file with the following fields:
    • Device Serial Number
    • Endpoint ID
    • Device Name
    • MAC Address
    • Manufacturer
    • Model
    • Software Version
    • Connection Status
    • Connection status as of

Move Alexa devices to different rooms

To move a device to a different room, the device must have an active connection. After you associate the device with a new room, keep the device powered on and online for one minute.

  1. Open the Alexa Smart Properties management console and navigate to the Echo Devices page for your property.
  2. From the Echo Devices list, choose the devices to move.
  3. From the Actions drop-down menu, choose Move to different room.
  4. Choose the new room for the devices.
  5. Choose Submit.
  6. Use the status bar at top of the page to track the progress of the operation. All selected devices are moved to the new room.

Disassociate Alexa devices from rooms

  1. Open the Alexa Smart Properties management console and navigate to the Echo Devices page.
  2. From the Echo Devices list, select the devices to disassociate.
  3. From the Actions drop-down menu, choose Disassociate from room.
  4. Choose OK.
  5. Use the status bar at top of the page to track the progress of the operation.

Change a device's friendly name

  1. Open the Alexa Smart Properties management console and navigate to the Echo Devices page.
  2. From the Echo Devices list, choose the device to rename.
  3. In the Device Details page, choose Rename.
  4. Enter a new friendly name for the device.
  5. Choose Submit.

Deregister devices

  1. Open the Alexa Smart Properties management console and navigate to the Echo Devices page.
  2. From the Echo Devices list, choose the devices to deregister.
  3. From the Actions menu, choose Deregister.

Discover smart devices for a room

  1. Open the Alexa Smart Properties management console and navigate to your Properties page.
  2. In the list of properties, choose the property.
  3. Navigate to the Rooms page for the property.
  4. From the Rooms list, choose the room.
  5. In the Room settings page, navigate to the Skills section
  6. Choose the Enabled Skills tab.
  7. Locate the smart home skill that corresponds to the smart devices you want to discover.
  8. To begin device discovery, choose Discover Devices.
  9. Wait for the discovery process to complete. This can take up to a minute.

    The console displays the list of smart devices that Alexa Smart Properties has discovered and associated with the room. The discovered smart devices also appear in the Smart Home Devices tab on the Room settings page.

Remove smart devices from a room

  1. Open the Alexa Smart Properties management console and navigate to the Echo Devices page.
  2. Choose the Smart Home Devices tab.
  3. Choose the smart devices to remove.
  4. Choose Forget.

Manage device groups

You can create a device group for a room and add Alexa devices and smart devices to the group. This lets a guest control devices as a logical unit. For example, by saying "Alexa, turn off Kitchen," where "Kitchen" is a device group containing two smart lights and one smart plug, a guest can turn off all three devices at the same time. Only devices that you've associated with the same room can be part of a device group. A device can only belong to one device group at a given time.

Create a device group for a room

  1. Open the Alexa Smart Properties management console and navigate to your Properties page.
  2. In the list of properties, choose the property.
  3. Navigate to the Rooms page for the property.
  4. From the Rooms list, choose the room.
  5. In the Room settings page, choose the Groups tab.
  6. Choose Create a New Group.
  7. In the Create device group dialog box, specify the settings as follows:
    1. In the Name field, enter a unique name for the device group.
    2. From the Devices list, choose the devices to be added.
  8. Choose Create.
